Description

Based in Gibsons, British Columbia, Ann-Marie Brown is a Canadian artist known for encaustic paintings that explore emotional and psychological states. “I think that the creative self is fundamentally analogue and needs to dance with the imperfections of the real world in order to create something of substance”, she says. Working with the difficult medium of encaustic, she likens the marks that build up on the canvas to scars and wrinkles on a person. “They are the story of becoming, written on the body,” she notes. The resulting works are lush and raw at the same time, bearing compassionate witness to the complexities of human nature.

Ann-Marie Brown’s work has been exhibited across Canada and the United States and was recently selected for inclusion in the 2024 High Button Press Featured Artist Masters Series. Residencies have allowed her to work in studios internationally, most recently during an extended residency in Helsinki awarded by the Artists’ Association of Finland. Her paintings have been published in numerous journals and featured in films. Works are held in private, public, and corporate collections including the Senvest Collection, the Woman’s Art Museum of Canada (Edmonton), The Encaustic Art Museum (Santa Fe), and Richardson Wealth Management.
